The Smart Rail is an innovative adult bed rail that helps to not only prevents accidentally falling out of bed, but it is also used for assisting users in moving in and out of bed and adjusting their position in bed.
Unlike most fixed bed rails, the Smart-Rail provides additional mobility as it is able to pivot out to provide standing support for standing. Most falls involving bed rails occurs when the user reaches out on fixed bed rails at a twisted angle and tries to stand without a solid support. The Smart Rail acts like a normal bed rail but can be unlocked by lifting to shift the rail to a right angle to the bed side for standing support.
This innovative design from Smart Rail allows users with slight mobility problems to gain greater independence. Relying less help from a care giver increases the patient’s confidence, making them feel better about themselves.
The Smart Rail installs easily without the need for much assembly. It fits up to king sized beds, a fairly unique feature considering most other bed rails works with only up to queen sized beds. The support frame of the bed rail is placed between the frame of the bed and the mattress and secured with the safety straps.
The bed rail locks vertically downwards so that accidental unlocking of the rail cannot occur when the user’s weight is placed on the rail. However, accidental unlocking of the rail can occur. This is especially so when the bed rail is used with flexible soft bed frames that can compress downward under load. This causes the bed frame to move downwards, causing the rail to become unlatched.
The bed rail is designed to hold up to 300 lbs of weight. Rarely will there be anyone who will exceed such a high weight capacity. Furthermore, the bed rail is secured with the safety straps, therefore making use of the entire bed as a counterweight. However, it should be noted that 300 Ibs refer to vertical load bearing. It should not be used for 300 Ibs of lateral support, especially when pulling on to get up in bed.
The rail height of the Smart Rail is adjustable, but only with the Smart Rail Leg Extenders which are sold separately. The Leg Extenders increases the available bed rail height from 80cm to 88cm. Without the Extenders, the Smart Rail comes only in one height. This is usually not a problem except for users who are exceptionally tall.
The Smart Rail is simple to install and easy to use. It has a certain degree of increased mobility compared to common fixed bed rails, but it should be noted that the Smart Rail is intended for users who are able to get up independently with moderate assistance. However, users should still be in care of a care giver and not rely solely on the Smart Rail for mobility.
